Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Research Reagents — Antibodies & Recombinant Proteins

Newcastle disease virus (NDV, formally Avian orthoavulavirus 1) is an enveloped, non-segmented, negative-sense RNA paramyxovirus (~15.2 kb genome) that causes Newcastle disease (ND) in poultry — one of the most economically important avian diseases worldwide, listed as notifiable by the OIE/WOAH. NDV strains range from lentogenic (low virulence, used as live vaccine) to velogenic (up to 100% mortality in chickens). NDV encodes six structural proteins: the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN, receptor binding and sialidase), fusion protein (F, membrane fusion — its cleavage site sequence determines virulence), matrix (M), nucleoprotein (NP), phosphoprotein (P), and RNA polymerase (L). Beyond veterinary virology, NDV has gained significant attention as a recombinant vaccine vector platform (NDV-vectored COVID-19 vaccines, NDV-HXP-S) and as an oncolytic virus in cancer immunotherapy — selectively replicating in tumor cells and stimulating anti-tumor immunity.

Hemagglutinin-Neuraminidase (HN)
HN is a multifunctional surface glycoprotein that binds sialic acid receptors (receptor attachment), cleaves sialic acid (neuraminidase activity to prevent self-aggregation and facilitate release), and triggers F protein activation for membrane fusion. HN is the primary target for NDV serological surveillance (HI assay) and a key component of NDV-vectored vaccine characterization. Available:

Which HN protein format is best for serology (HI assay replacement)?
HN N-His (VK544012) is recommended for direct ELISA plate coating as an alternative to traditional hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assays. For sandwich or capture-based formats, HN C-Fc (VK544011) can be captured on Protein A-coated plates for oriented antigen presentation.

Do you have NDV F protein reagents?
F protein (fusion) is the primary virulence determinant — velogenic strains have a polybasic F cleavage site. F protein reagents are currently in development. Contact us for availability or to request custom F protein variants (specific cleavage site mutants, prefusion-stabilized F).

Can these reagents be used for oncolytic NDV research?
Yes. Our HN and NP reagents can be used to characterize oncolytic NDV preparations: HN protein and antibody for quantifying surface HN expression on oncolytic NDV virions, and NP antibody for monitoring NDV replication in tumor cell lysates by WB or IHC. For recombinant NDV-vectored vaccines (e.g., NDV-HXP-S expressing SARS-CoV-2 spike), use our NDV reagents alongside target-specific reagents from our SARS-CoV-2 page.
