Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA gammacoronavirus (~27.6 kb genome) that causes infectious bronchitis (IB) in chickens — a highly contagious upper respiratory and urogenital tract disease with global economic impact on the poultry industry through reduced egg production, poor growth, and secondary bacterial infections. IBV is the prototypic gammacoronavirus and has served as a coronavirus model organism since its discovery in the 1930s. The spike glycoprotein S1 subunit — divided into N-terminal domain (NTD, receptor binding) and C-terminal domain (CTD) — determines serotype specificity and is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine strain selection. Non-structural proteins NSP3 (papain-like protease, X/macro domain), 3CL protease (NSP5), NSP2, and NSP9 (RdRp cofactor) are essential for viral replication and represent antiviral drug targets.

Spike S1 Glycoprotein — Serotype Determinant & Vaccine Target

The S1 subunit determines IBV serotype and contains the major neutralizing epitopes. S1 is cleaved from S2 by furin-like proteases and is the primary component of IBV vaccines and diagnostic typing assays.
