Animal dander allergens are a leading cause of perennial allergic rhinitis and asthma, with cat and dog sensitization affecting 10–20% of the global population. The major cat allergen Fel d 1 is uniquely potent — detectable in virtually all indoor environments including homes without cats. Dog allergens (Can f 1–6) include lipocalins and prostatic kallikrein (Can f 5), the latter being a male dog-specific allergen relevant for gender-specific avoidance advice. Laboratory animal allergy (LAA) to mouse (Mus m 1) and rat (Rat n 1) urinary proteins is a significant occupational health concern for researchers.

Fel d 1 (Cat) — A secretoglobin heterodimer produced primarily in cat sebaceous and salivary glands. Fel d 1 is the dominant cat allergen, responsible for >90% of cat-specific IgE reactivity. Its exceptional aerodynamic properties (carried on small particles <5 μm) enable deep lung penetration and persistent environmental contamination. Anti-Fel d 1 monoclonal antibodies are in development for passive immunotherapy and allergen-neutralizing approaches.

Can f 1 / Can f 2 / Can f 5 (Dog) — Can f 1 (lipocalin) and Can f 2 (lipocalin) are the major dog dander allergens. Can f 5 (arginine esterase/prostatic kallikrein) is uniquely produced by male dogs and cross-reacts with human PSA, explaining why some patients tolerate female but not male dogs. CRD with Can f 5 enables gender-specific avoidance counseling.

Equ c 1 (Horse) — The major horse allergen (lipocalin), responsible for severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis upon direct horse exposure. Equ c 1 cross-reacts with other lipocalin allergens (Can f 1, Fel d 4), contributing to multi-pet sensitization patterns.
