Tissue-resident immune cells drive genetic risk in autoimmune and lung diseases

A massive analysis of immune cells in human tissue is yielding clues to the root causes of lung and autoimmune diseases. In a new Nature Immunology study, LJI scientists analyzed more than 1.1 million immune cells found in the lungs of 128 human study volunteers. The researchers discovered that these immune cells can express certain genes associated with genetic risk for lung and autoimmune diseases. These genes may put tissue-resident immune cells on a path to become dysfunctional, unable to prevent—or actively causing—disease.
