Background

Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase, cytoplasmic is a ~57 kDa protein. Catalyzes the condensation of acetyl-CoA with acetoacetyl-CoA to form HMG-CoA, which is converted by HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) into mevalonate, a precursor for cholesterol synthesis.
