Background

Serine proteinase inhibitor 2 (OPG199) is a ~38 kDa protein. Viral serpin that inhibits both cysteine and serine proteinases involved in the regulation of host inflammatory and apoptosis processes. Major anti-apoptotic protein which inhibits both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways and strongly cleaves host CASP1 and CASP8 but is a rather poor inhibitor of host CASP3. Prevents the proteolytic activity of host interleukin-1-beta converting enzyme (ICE) and ICE-like enzymes. Can also block apoptosis through host tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor.
