Rotavirus A (RV-A) is a double-stranded RNA virus causing severe acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children globally. The virus has a triple-layered capsid structure with outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 determining serotype (P and G types). VP6 in the intermediate layer is the group antigen. VP4 (spike protein) and VP7 (glycoprotein) are primary targets for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine development. Rotavirus vaccines have significantly reduced disease burden, and diagnostic and therapeutic antibodies remain important for clinical research and vaccine immunogenicity studies.
