Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA deltacoronavirus (~25.4 kb genome) that causes acute diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration in neonatal piglets, with significant mortality in suckling pigs. First identified in Hong Kong in 2012 and subsequently detected in the United States (2014), China, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, PDCoV has become a globally important swine enteric pathogen alongside PEDV and TGEV. Critically, PDCoV has confirmed zoonotic potential — it was detected in plasma samples of Haitian children with acute febrile illness in 2021, using aminopeptidase N (APN/CD13) as its receptor, which is broadly expressed across mammalian species.
